The SSCS chapter of SADD – Students Against Destructive Decisions – sponsored Red Ribbon Spirit Week Oct. 26-30, calling on all students to take the pledge to make good decisions and support healthy choices when it comes to themselves and others.
Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign held in October that inspires our kids to be happy, brave and drug free.
During the week, SADD members encouraged all SSCS students to sign a school banner supporting one another in a pledge to make good decisions and not destructive ones. In return they receive a red ribbon which symbolizes their pledge to stay alcohol, tobacco, and drug free.
Red Ribbon Spirit Week also included daily giveaways and raffles and Monday-Friday school “dress-up” spirit days to promote school unity and support for the SADD cause.
A highlight of the week is when SSCS welcomed Marianne Angelillo, who shared her son’s story with our students and staff entitled “Share Your Stones!”
Angelillo is an author, professional motivational speaker, and traffic safety advocate based in Skaneateles, New York. She dedicated her life to raising awareness about the dangers of underage drinking, impaired driving, and reckless driving after a profound personal tragedy.
On Father’s Day in 2004, her 17-year-old son, Matthew—a talented athlete, honor student, and future Air Force Academy candidate—was killed as a passenger in a high-speed, alcohol-related car crash. Thank you to our SADD members for organizing this meaningful presentation and to Marianne for sharing her story with our school community. Her message was a powerful reminder of the importance of making healthy choices and the lasting impact they can have.
