acquatic biologist visits 5th graders for experiments with trout

Steven Swenson, an aquatic biologist from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for more than 20 years, visited the SSCS fifth grade science class in May. He presented lesson on the local trout habitat in Sharon Springs and how these fish have uniquely adapted to live with the higher sulfur levels present in the water here. He also brought in some of their food sources (macro invertebrates) for students to identify and handle. An aquatic biologist like Steve studies freshwater or marine ecosystems, monitors fish populations, conducts water quality assessments, and manages habitats to preserve aquatic wildlife across regional lakes, rivers, and streams in our state.
