Principal’s Message

This week our students finished the second quarter. As we transition to the second half of the school year, I want to remind everyone that this is a great time to reevaluate start-of-the-year goals as well as adjust steps you are making in meeting these goals. If you have not set goals, now is a great time to do just that.

Student Focus

This week at SSCS we focused on the character strength of social intelligence. Social intelligence means individuals are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You try to understand why they do things.

Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Social intelligence helps individuals build relationships — and is important to numerous aspects of a person’s life. It allows an individual to form friendships and alliances. And it assists a person against being taken advantage of. People with social intelligence can “read” other people’s faces and know what motivates them. Social intelligence builds over time and as a person ages. In this sense, it is similar to the character strength of perspective.

Please practice and develop this character strength by discussing with peers, parents and teachers the concept of what it means to be socially aware and socially engaged.

Have a wonderful start to the third quarter!

FFA attends “Ignite” Conference

On a cold Saturday morning on Jan. 20, the FFA officers headed to Marathon, NY to a new FFA Leadership Series called Ignite. This conference had more than 400 students in attendance!

8th grade students, Madison Lynk, Payton Rullman, and Sophia Insogna attended the Spark conference geared to younger members and Hunter Bolster attended the Fuel Conference, while Mrs. Allen attended two workshops and an FFA advisor meeting.

The student conference Spark was designed to engage younger members in learning about the many opportunities there are in the FFA, evaluating their own personal skills and interests and setting goals for the future! Fuel was designed for 9th and 10th graders to focus on leading themselves, fueling their growth and success and building networks!

Not only did our Sharon Springs members meet new friends, but came home with great ideas for our chapter activities this year!

Ten people stand in a line in a gymnasium. Three on either side are dressed in uniforms and four students stand in the middle.
