Six student members of the SSCS SADD chapter attended the Youth Summit at the Capital Center in Albany on March 7. This summit included presentations from a variety of people, including Miss New York, on suicide prevention, and the dangers and consequences of addiction. In addition, there were a variety of vendors giving out free items to inform people of their services.

Attending the Youth Summit was SADD President Anneliese Herzog, who participated in the National Guard push-up challenge. Joining here were SSCS freshmen Tyler Lyon, Devin Tissiere, and Clayton VanPatten, and eighth graders Sophia Insogna and Lucas Perry. Our SSCS students were excellent role models for others. Please take a look at the SADD board on the second floor of the school that our freshmen, Tyler and Clayton, created.

SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions, a much broader campaign than the Students Against Drunk Driving SADD initiative first launched back in 1981. Students in the Sharon Springs SADD chapter are part of a national organization that works to provide education to our students about the dangers of destructive decisions, which includes the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. They also try to educate youngsters about the dangers and harms of bullying and being a bystander.

Throughout the school year, SSCS SADD members raise funds to create environments that promote having an “enjoyable” time with their peers in a safe setting. This includes a Red Ribbon Dance in the fall, a Winter Ball, and a post-prom party.

The post-prom party is on May 4 this year and at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. At the post-prom, students have a night of being able to participate in any of the activities there that they choose, and receive giveaways for being in attendance which include gift cards, items for college, free yearbooks, etc.

The SADD organization is looking for any donation of food, beverages, and gift cards/baskets for giveaways to our attendees. Please email Jennifer Field, SADD Advisor at jfield@sharonsprings.org if you would like to donate an item. Thank you!
