Nearly 1 million workers are needed in the construction industry by the end of 2026, making now the best time in recent history for those considering making a living in construction. One of them is SSCS senior Macord Stevens, Jr.

This fall, Stevens began his second year enrolled in the Building Trades program at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Tech Center (CTE). He said his junior year at BOCES laid a good foundation for future success and now he is building on those skills as a senior.

“I like learning how to make my own house and how to wire it and do things that are useful for myself,” said Stevens, who along with his fellow learners participated in October Careers in Construction Month. Careers in Construction Month is a nationwide celebration and recognition of the career opportunities that exist throughout the construction industry.

In CTE Building Trades, Stevens is immersed in standardized craft training programs developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and gaining valuable experience through on- and off-campus projects. He is also learning about job safety, green construction, blueprint reading and energy efficiency techniques.

As he prepares to graduate from SSCS in June, Stevens is working to earn various industry certifications, which are recognized by contractors and employers across the country. Best of luck to Macord on a great future!
