SSCS honors 2025 retirees Barb Handy, left, and Tammy Behr with 78 years of combined teaching experience

SSCS held its year-end Secondary School Awards Ceremony June 4 honoring students in grades 6-7 and 9-11 for achievement in academics, attendance, music and athletics. Eighth and 12th grade students will be honored at their upcoming graduation ceremonies later this month.

The SSCS Class of 2025 also dedicated the 2025 yearbook to Special Education/Support Service teacher Tonja Law and recognized retirees Business teacher Barb Handy and Physical Education teacher/coach Tammy Behr. Congratulations to our students and families!

ATTENDANCE AWARDS

Perfect Attendance

No minutes missed … no absences, tardiness or early dismissals for any reason with the exception of a school sponsored field trip.

Outstanding Attendance

No absences. All tardiness and/or early dismissals excused because of medical or dental appointments (s). A written excuse from the doctor or dentist must be supplied upon return.

Students have no more than a combined 1-3 absences, tardies and/or dismissals, regardless of reason.

DODI CECHNICKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Established 2016)

A cash award in memory of Dodi Cechnicki, a Family and Consumer Science teacher for 23 years at SSCS and also at Mont Pleasant Middle School in the Schenectady City School District, where she was named the district’s 2008 Teacher of the Year. Dodi had a great love for home and family. This award is given to a student in Grades 9-12 who shows the most talent and interest in Family and Consumer Sciences. Sponsored by the family of Dodi Cechnicki.

SCHOHARIE LEATHERSTOCKING CHAPTER OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICA REVOLUTION YOUTH ESSAY AND VIDEO AWARDS

KEITH EBERHART MEMORIAL AWARD

Award presented by the classes of 1980, 1981 and 1983 Student Council in memory of Keith Eberhart. It is awarded to the Sophomore boy, who in the coaches’ opinion, demonstrated the most team spirit as a basketball player.

Two tickets to a season performance awarded to a student who has made a significant contribution to the music program during his or her high school career and shows an appreciation for music.

Recognition to the boys in Grades 9-12 whom the girls would select as a brother given the opportunity to choose and to the girls in Grades 9-12 whom the boys would select as a sister given the opportunity to choose.

STUDENT COUNCIL LEADERSHIP AWARDS– ROBERT L FITCH MEMORIAL

Given to a boy or girl in each grade 6-12, who exhibited the most outstanding leadership qualities in extracurricular activities at SSCS. Chosen through a combined vote of students and faculty advisors in extracurricular organizations. Dependability, service and character are the most important criteria in the selection of this exceptional leadership award. Twelfth and 8th grade winners will be announced at their individual ceremonies later this month.

SECTION IV CHARACTER COUNTS RECOGNITION AWARD

Section IV believes at the heart of every leader must be positive character traits. As Michael Josephson states: “Our character is both formed and revealed by how we deal with everyday challenges as well as extraordinary pressures and temptation, like a well-made tower, character is built stone by stone, decision by decision.”

20th CENTURY CLUB CITIZENSHIP AWARD

Award given to a member of the Sophomore class who has leadership capacity, maintained a 75 or above average and has an exemplary behavioral record. Sponsored by the 20th Century Club.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

This award recognizes outstanding commitment to academic achievement. To be eligible, students must have a Grade Point Average between 90-100 and a recommendation from at least two other school staff members. As part of the criteria, recommendations have included activities in which the student demonstrates high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities and/or exceptional judgment.

SAMUEL W. KAIDO MEMORIAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

A cash award given to a male and a female student selected by a committee of all SSCS athletic coaches on the basis of good citizenship, sportsmanship, participation in at least two varsity sports and maintains an average of at least 75. The winners have their name engraved on a plaque which is displayed in the trophy case. Sponsored by the family of Samuel and Bonnell Kaido.
