SSCS second graders studied this year’s world famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March. The 2026 race began on March 7 with a ceremonial start in Anchorage, Alaska and saw 29 finishers compete for a $650,000 prize purse on the 1,000-mile northern route which ended in Nome. Students picked a musher they liked, learned about the musher and followed their progress along the route each day. Jessie Holmes (who Parker picked) won the Iditarod, marking his second consecutive championship with a winning time of 9 days, 7 hours, and 32 minutes. The children celebrated all the musher and their dogs with an Iditarod party in their classroom.
