The SSCS fifth grade class had an opportunity to experience the Albany Pine Bush Preserve on a guided mile-long hike in November with theirs teacher Samantha Holmes and Samuel Bonderoff.

The 3,350-acre preserve is home to a unique variety of rare plants and animals, including the federally endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. Students toured the Pine Bush Discovery Center, recognize animal activity and learned how animals are getting ready for winter survival. They also learned about the preserve’s geologic and cultural significance, examined the plants and animals that live in this landscape, studied preserve management principles, and considered the human impacts on this sensitive landscape.
