SSCS 8th graders in Rachel Ferreira’s Career & Technical Education class (CTE) took a field trip to the SUNY Cobleskill Dairy Processing Center on Nov. 14 where they got to see where the cows live, watch how they’re milked, and tour the entire processing facility. They learned the full journey of milk from cow to consumer — and asked some fantastic questions along the way!
“This trip was the perfect way to connect our classwork to real-world application,” Ferreira said. “We’ve been studying the dairy industry, food systems, cleanliness, and processing standards in class, and students were able to see those concepts come to life right in front of them.”
To top it all off, they sampled fresh cheese and milk made right on campus. It was an engaging, hands-on experience that strengthened their understanding and appreciation of where our food comes from.
The Dairy Processing Center is a $1.4 million state-of-the-art facility opening in 2022 to assist regional dairy producers in developing and piloting novel and traditional value-added products. The center offers experiential education opportunities to students and essential business development services to the region’s dairy producers and processors.
