After School Student’s Working With Chemical Reactions

on January 5, 2018

The students in the after school program have been working on chemical reactions and have completed experiments that show how particle size and temperature of the reactants affect the rate of chemical reactions.  Students learned that one sign of a chemical reaction is the formation of bubbles.  We have also worked on scientific questions and the scientific method.  The picture shows a chemical reaction called “Elephant’s Toothpaste” where oxygen gas is given off by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst.  In this experiment yeast acted as the catalyst causing lots of bubbles to form.  The students also learned that this reaction gives off heat and is called an exothermic reaction.
